La foresta di Danneröder (Danni) nella Germania centrale è stata negli ultimi 30 anni il luogo dove la popolazione locale ha resistito contro la costruzione dell’autostrada A49. L’occupazione della foresta è nata a ottobre 2019 con poche case sugli alberi ma è lentamente cresciuta fino a includere più di 100 strutture dove vivevano da 200 a 400 persone.
Questo spazio occupato è stato sgomberato dai tirapiedi dello stato (2000 sbirri e una manciata di “treekiller”) e il tratto di foresta è stato abbattuto. Durante questo sgombero, durato due mesi, la violenza della polizia si è mostrata al suo apice causando lesioni fisiche e psichiche: le persone sono state ferite a volte anche gravemente e traumatizzate emotivamente. Molte persone sono state arrestate e purtroppo alcune sono ancora rinchiuse e rapite dallo stato.
Una di queste persone è Ella o UP1 (UnknownPerson1 nome dato dagli organi repressivi).
Si è rifiutatx di identificarsi ed è rinchiusx per questo dal 26 novembre 2020 in detenzione investigativa. La persona è stata incriminata per tentato omicidio colposo, l’accusa è di aver tirato un calcio in testa a uno sbirro nel mentre che veniva sgomberata da una traversa (una corda messa tra due alberi). Nonostante durante il processo non tutti gli sbirri che hanno testimoniato hanno confermato la versione dell’accusa e nonostante nel video dello sgombero portato in tribunale non si veda nessun calcio la sentenza è stata di 27 mesi di prigione senza condizionale. Questo porterebbe il tempo di reclusione totale a tre anni.
Ci sono state molte azioni di solidarietà contro quella che è chiaramente una sentenza politica volta a inasprire la repressione contro le esperienze di occupazione delle foreste. Nell’ultimo periodo infatti questa pratica si è diffusa velocemente portando La nostra solidarietà va a Ella, a tuttx le prigionierx e a coloro che ancora resistono sugli alberi.

Quando scrivete lettere, per favore usate UWP Eins. Noi abbiamo eliminato la W (che in tedesco significa femmina) ma la prigione no.

Oggi è il 207° giorno di detenzione investigativa. Sono statx separatx dalle persone e dai luoghi che amo, il che è un tipo di tortura che non aiuta nessuno. Come si può dire che alcun tipo di vera giustizia derivi dalla pratica di rinchiudere le persone, visto che le esigenze concrete relative alla situazione che ha portato una persona lì non vengono soddisfatte? Le persone in prigione sono troppo limitate, essendo e sentendosi punite, per aprire i loro cuori alla riconciliazione. Ogni volta che il metallo sbatte contro il metallo, quando unx prigionierx è ingabbiatx, è rinchiusx nell’odio, il suo e quello del mondo. Come possiamo aspettarci che la società vada avanti così?
La prigione è un microcosmo di tutto il sistema, che secondo me non funziona. I tassi di criminalità non si riducono. I tassi di recidiva, mi è stato detto, arrivano all’80%. Nel mio tempo alla prigione di Francoforte, io stessx ho visto 4 persone essere rilasciate, solo per tornare settimane dopo, senza aver ricevuto l’aiuto di cui avevano bisogno. Eppure ho assistito alla costruzione dell’espansione della prigione e alla follia di coloro che sono al potere che fanno sempre la stessa cosa crudele e repressiva. Cercano almeno di ottenere risultati diversi? Credo che nelle generazioni a venire, guarderemo indietro a questa pratica di punizione nello stesso modo in cui questa generazione guarda ai tempi della schiavitù, con orrore per la mancanza di umanità.
Quando faccio un appello per la mia libertà, non voglio solo la mia libertà. La desidero per tuttx i/le prigionierx che sono intrappolatx nelle carceri e desidero che ricevano l’aiuto di cui hanno bisogno. Desidero anche la libertà per tuttx coloro che sono bloccatx in questo macrocosmo di un sistema socio-economico che trasforma la natura in “beni” e la comunità in “servizi”. E per coloro che sentono che i doni che hanno portato a questo mondo sono stati tristemente mal spesi a favore del profitto finanziario. Voglio che Tuttx noi siamo liberx da questo sventurato sistema di controllo. Essere liberx di sperimentare le qualità di solidarietà, mutuo aiuto e autonomia che creano integrità e vitalità e mostrano che vera giustizia è stata fatta. La prigione in sé non mi salva tanto, ma mi rende tremendamente triste. La mia vera paura è che il mondo non si renda conto del danno che sta facendo a se stesso. Che continui a ignorare, negare, rinnegare e rifiutare questi problemi sistemici. La mia paura è che il mondo continui a seguire percorsi egoistici separati e si allontani dalla verità per sostenere la propria arroganza. La mia vera paura è che perdiamo di vista le questioni più grandi della vita sulla Terra mentre siamo avvoltx in questa politica di distrazione e paura, che perdiamo di vista la questione dell’appartenenza al nostro ambiente naturale e la sua appartenenza a ciascunx di noi. E in quell’appartenenza il dovere di cura sotto forma di protezione e ripristino che non viene fatto sulla scala di cui ci sarebbe bisogno per evitare che il nostro mondo naturale cada ancora di più nella degradazione grave e irreversibile, che sta accadendo ogni giorno mentre ci sediamo e passiamo in rassegna accuse insensate.
Parlando di accuse insensate, sentiamo un rapporto dell’Alsfelder Allgemeine del 16 giugno, che cita una delle tante dichiarazioni discutibili della polizia:
“Ich dachte, es ist so wie die Tage vorher. Die Aktivisten denken, ok, wir hatten unseren Spaß und alle wollen wieder sicher vom Baum runter” (“Pensavo che fosse come nei giorni precedenti. Gli attivisti pensano, ok, ci siamo divertiti e tutti vogliono tornare giù dall’albero in sicurezza”).
Spaß, credo che la traduzione di “Spaß” sia “divertimento”. Le persone nella foresta di Dannenröder, e nelle foreste di tutta la Germania sono tornate sugli alberi più e più volte, ma pensate che la preoccupazione per la repressione della polizia sia divertente per loro?
Stare sedutx da solx in una cella, con il rumore delle motoseghe, le urla degli/lle amicx e le visioni di alberi che cadono, e migliaia di poliziotti che potrebbero volerlx brutalizzare, è divertente?può portare
Che dire di tutte le persone a cui la polizia ha tagliato le funi di sicurezza e che sono cadute a metri di altezza? E la persona che è stata mandata all’ospedale per lesioni spinali? Quanto è stato divertente il loro recupero?
Quanto è divertente che così tantx della mia generazione stiano soffrendo di quello che è diventato noto come “eco-dolore” ed “eco-ansia”, dato che ogni giorno che passa, ogni settimana che passa, ci sono rapporti che mostrano quanto sia davvero terribile la situazione della nostra salute planetaria? Più recentemente, il ghiaccio del circolo polare artico potrebbe essere completamente scomparso entro il 2035 a causa del surriscaldamento che avviene da sotto la piattaforma di ghiaccio così come da sopra e dalle correnti circostanti. Quando la mia generazione vede i pericoli imminenti di questi eventi e il rifiuto e la pretesa dei leader democraticamente eletti di fare molto al riguardo, oltre che la scelta di accelerare i pericoli permettendo che si verifichi un ecocidio così sconsiderato, posso dirvi che il dolore per ciò che stiamo perdendo, e l’ansia per ciò che potrebbe venire, non è divertente.
Mi è stata data l’opportunità ogni giorno di dare la mia identità e uscire dal carcere, ma purtroppo il privilegio della sicurezza dell’anonimato non arriva così facilmente alle classi inferiori come alla polizia. E così ho affrontato le conseguenze di voler rimanere anonimx e al sicuro in un mondo di attivismo che rischia la repressione, mentre mi occupo di vere indagini criminali e di fermare coloro che ogni giorno compiono assalti all’ecosfera.
Punizioni, minacce ed esposizione mediatica non aumentano la sicurezza. Comprendere gli interessi delle/gli altrx, vivere e agire a partire dalla stessa realtà, sì. Questa sicurezza e questa lotta per preservare il nostro bellissimo e sano mondo naturale è ciò che ho scelto di privilegiare rispetto alla mia libertà. Questi interessi migliori sono i miei e quelli di moltx attivistx. Loro sono ancora sugli alberi e ancora per le strade che vogliono che le autorità si facciano avanti e agiscano a partire dalla stessa realtà. Vogliamo porre fine all’ecocidio e alla repressione. Vi invitiamo a unirvi a noi.

Sentence Update and Letter from Ella/UP1
For the past 30 years, the Danneröder (Danni) forest in central Germany has been the place where local people have resisted against the construction of the A49 freeway. The occupation of the forest started in October 2019 with a few tree houses but slowly grew to include more than 100 structures where 200 to 400 people lived.
This occupied space was cleared by the state’s minions (2000 cops and a handful of “treekillers”) and the stretch of forest was cleared. During this eviction, which lasted two months, police violence was at its peak causing physical and psychological injuries: people were injured, sometimes seriously, and emotionally traumatized. Many people have been arrested and unfortunately some are still locked up and kidnapped by the state.
One of these people is Ella or UP1 (UnknownPerson1 name given by the repressive organs).
They refused to identify themself and have been locked up for this since November 26, 2020 in investigative detention. The person was charged with attempted manslaughter, with the accusation of having kicked a policeman in the head while being freed from a traverse (a rope placed between two trees). Despite the fact that during the trial not all of the policemen who testified confirmed the version of the prosecution and despite the fact that in the video of the eviction brought to court you can not see any kick the sentence was 27 months in prison without parole. This would bring the total duration of the prison to three years.
There have been many actions of solidarity against what is clearly a political sentence aimed at tightening the repression against the experiences of forest occupations. In the last period, in fact, this practice has spread rapidly leading to more than twenty new occupations. Our solidarity goes to Ella, to all the prisoners and to those who are still resisting on the trees.

Last Letter from Ella
Frankfurt JVA, June 21st ’21
Today marks the 207th day that I’ve been held in investigative detention. I’ve been separated from the people and places, I love, which is a kind of torture that helps no one. How can we say any real justice comes from the practise of locking people up as there are no actual needs met regarding the situation that got a person there? People in prison are too restricted, being and feeling punished to open their hearts to reconciliation. Every time metal slams against metal, as a prisoner is caged, they are locked away with hatred, theirs and the world’s. How can we expect society to move forward like this?
Prison is a microcosm of the entire system, that in my view does not work. The rates of crime do not reduce. The rates of repeat offenders I’ve been told are as high as 80%. In my time at the Frankfurt prison, I myself have seen 4 people be released, only to return weeks later, not having received the help they needed. Yet I have watched the construction of the prison expansion and the madness of those in power that do the same cruel, repressive thing. Do they even try to get different results? I believe that in generations to come, we will look back on this practise of punishment in the same way this generation looks back at times of slavery, with horror at the lack of humanity.
When I make a plea for my freedom, I do not just want my own freedom. I wish it for all the prisoners who are trapped in the prisons and that they get the help that they need. I also wish for freedom for all those stuck in this macrocosm of a socio-economic system which turns nature into “goods” & community into “services”. And who feel that the gifts they brought to this world are being sadly misspent for the sake of financial profit. I want us All to be free from this misfortunate system of control. Be free to experience the qualities of solidarity, mutual aid & autonomy that create wholeness and vitality and show true justice is being done. Prison in itself doesn’t save me so much, but it does make me tremendously sad. My real fear is that the world does not wake up to the harm it is doing to itself. That it keeps on ignoring, denying, disowning & rejecting those systemic problems. My fear is that the world carries on in separate egoistical paths and turns away from truth to bolster its own righteousness. My real fear is that we lose sight of the greater matters of life on Earth whilst we are wrapped up in this politics of distraction & fear that we lose sight of the matter of belonging to our natural environment and it belonging to each and everyone of us. And in that belonging the duty of care in the form of protection and restoration which is not being done on the scale it needs to keep our natural world from falling deeper into the severe and irreversible degradation, that is happening everyday whilst we sit and go through mindless accusations.
Speaking of mindless accusations, let’s hear a report from the 16th June Alsfelder Allgemeine, that quotes one of the many questionable statements the police have given:
“Ich dachte, es ist so wie die Tage vorher. Die Aktivisten denken, ok, wir hatten unseren Spaß und alle wollen wieder sicher vom Baum runter.”
Spaß, I believe the translation for “Spaß” is “fun”. People in the Dannenröder Forest, and in forests all over Germany have got back up into the trees time and time again, but do you think the worry over the repression the police may bring is fun for them?
To perhaps sit alone in a jail cell, with the sound of chainsaws, the screams of friends and visions of falling trees, and thousands of police that may wish to brutalise them, is fun?
What about all the people whose security lines were cut by police and who fell metres to the ground? What about the person who was sent to hospital for spinal injuries? How much fun was their recovery?
How funny is it that so many of my generation are suffering from what has come to be known as “eco-grief” and “eco-anxiety” as with each passing day, in each passing week, there are reports showing how dire the situation of our planetary health really is? Most recently, the arctic circle ice may be completely gone by 2035 due to warming that happens under the ice shelf as well as from above and surrounding currents. When my generation sees the upcoming dangers of these events and the democratically elected leaders refusal and pretence to do much about them, but even choose to accelerate the dangers by allowing such reckless ecocide to occur, I can tell you that grief of what we are losing, and that anxiety, of what may come, is not fun.
I was given the opportunity every day to give my identity and get out of prison, but unfortunately the privilege of security in anonymity does not come so easily to the lower classes as it comes to the police. And so I’ve dealt with the consequences of wanting to stay anonymous and safe in a world of activism that risks repression whilst working on true criminal investigation and stoppage of those who carry out assault on the ecosphere every day.
Punishment, threats and exposure do not increase safety. Understanding one another’s best interests, living in and acting from the same reality, does. This safety and this struggle to keep our beautiful and healthy natural world is what I chose to prioritise over my own freedom. These best interests are my own and that of many of the activists. They are still in the trees and still on the streets wanting the authorities to step up and act from the same reality. We want to end ecocide and end the repression. We invite you to join us.
